Scarlett has blossomed and just continues to get fatter and prettier.
I found out that she really doesn't know anything, as far as riding goes.
She doesn't buck or rear, or fight you, she just stands there,
unless she is following her love, Bones.
She takes the saddle and bridle well, stands quietly for mounting and then just stands there. No amount of encouragement, kicking, nudging, clucking, crop, makes her move forward, backward or sideways.
This is just a prime example of how broodmares should all be saddle trained.
They don't immediately pass away after they are retired from breeding. Sadly, most breeders don't give their old mares the luxury of life out to pasture.
These old girls all deserve that, but in case that is not what is in store for them, they should be able to be ridden.
So, the next step with Scarlett is going to be a little ground work, some lounging, some ground driving and hopefully she will make a great horse for a little girl.

So here she is in all her fattness!

Well, Scarlett certainly is not suffering now.

Sometimes Scarlett seems to stand around and "rest" a lot, at least when I'm there snapping pictures. Her ears are always up, it's so funny. I swear the horse is just so grateful. Taylor hand walks her a lot around the barn and she grazes on the early grass trying to come up, and she CHOWS DOWN. She's eating "grain" really well twice a day and she get's hay 24 /7. Poor thing, even though she's getting grain twice daily, she still walks up to, and looks in her feed buckets just making sure she didn't miss something. She nickers a lot too. It's so sweet.
February 16 2008

<od>It was a week ago tonight that Scarlet was saved at the Pony Express. We've really seen her progress a good bit this week. She seems to feel a lot better than she did a week ago. Some of us even think she's gained a little weight. She's really starting to pay attention to the other horses and she even trotted once this week. She didn't trot very far, but as far as I could tell she looked sound.

We put her and "bones" (another recovered rescue horse) together in the front field today. Bones was also saved by Julie. He is at least 30 years old but looks great! I've been told that he was in even worse shape than Scarlet is. So the two of them hang out together and enjoy their own private round bale, safe from the antics of the herd. The edema seems to be a lot better than it was originally. She was given a shot of Lasix (sp?) and it seems to be helping. We are really hoping the heart murmur will disappear with time and recovery. We are watching her closely for signs of founder and so far so good.

Fed on a regular basis.... finally.

I asked the vet "What are these lumps on her neck?" He said "That's her spinal column."
You can even see it in this photo. I was just dumbfouned.
